Father Christmas Arrives
” … by train on the Commonwealth Trans-Australia line, part of the special Christmas ‘Tea and Sugar’ Train”
From 1917 until 1996, this mixed train (i.e. carrying passenger and freight) brought supplies to the isolated towns on the Nullarbor Plain between Kalgoorlie and Port Augusta.
Some of the remote settlements along the line in this region supported mining … but most were needed for local support and maintenance of the transcontinental railway itself.
As you know, Christmas in Australia is just a few days after the first day of their summer.
